Common Causes of Knee Pain
The knee is a strong but complex joint that takes a lot of pressure in daily life, sport, and training. Knee pain can develop suddenly from an injury or gradually over time due to wear and tear. Some of the most common causes we treat include:
• Osteoarthritis (OA): Wear-and-tear of the cartilage leading to pain, stiffness, and swelling.
• Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome (Kneecap pain or Runner’s Knee): Pain around the kneecap, often felt during squatting, running, or stair-climbing.
• Ligament Injuries (eg. ACL Tears): Often caused by twisting movements or sudden impacts.
• Tendinopathies: Overuse injuries like patellar tendinopathy, common in jumping athletes and active individuals.
• Bursitis / Fat Pad syndrome: Inflammation of fluid-filled sacs (bursae) that cushion the knee joint.
• Growing Pain (eg. Osgood schlatter disease or Sinding-Larsen-Johansson syndrome) in teenagers related to growth pates changes
Why Knee Pain Happens
Knee pain can occur from an injury, such as a twist in sport.
Knee pain can also come on without a specific cause. Research shows there are a number of factors that increase risk of developing knee pain, including:
• Previous Injuries, structural changes such as OA
• Muscle Imbalances (especially weak hip, glute, or quadricep muscles)
• Both inactivity and excessive activity
• Increased central adiposity: carrying excess weight around your middle
• Pain sensitising factors such as poor sleep or lowered mood
• Poor confidence loading a leg, eg after an injury
• Overtensing and overprotecting the sore knee
How We Treat Knee Pain at Fit Bomb
Our approach is simple but powerful: education, movement, and smart rehab.
• Expert Assessment: We start with a detailed history of your story and pain problem, followed by a thorough movement analysis and physical assessment to pinpoint the real cause of your pain.
• Early referral for appropriate imaging and to specialists when necessary. This can be particularly important for acute / sports injuries.
• Individualised Exercise Therapy: Strengthening and stability exercises are the cornerstone of lasting knee health. We’ll design a program just for you, focused on rebuilding strength, flexibility, and control.
• Hands-On Physiotherapy: Targeted manual therapy can help reduce pain, improve mobility, and speed up your recovery.
• Load Management: We teach you how to manage training loads and daily activity levels to help your knee recover — and thrive.
• Learning to re-tense around the knee and build confidence moving: building strength is important, but so is not overprotecting or over tensing the muscles around your knee. We’ll work with you to re-build the confidence to do all the things you loved to do before you had knee pain.
• Lifestyle management: for factors such as sleep, stress, mood and activity are also important for knee pain
• Communication with the rest of your health and fitness team, such as GP, personal trainers, coaches etc.
