Muscle Strains

Recover Stronger. Move Smarter. Stay Injury-Free.

Muscle strains are one of the most common injuries we treat at Fit Bomb Physio, whether you’re an elite athlete, weekend warrior, or simply moving through everyday life. A muscle strain occurs when muscle fibres are overstretched or torn—usually due to a sudden forceful movement, overuse, or fatigue. The good news? With the right guidance, most strains heal well, and you can come back even stronger.

What Causes Muscle Strains?

Muscle strains can happen during high-speed movements (like sprinting or jumping), when lifting heavy objects, or even from prolonged posture-related tension. Some of the most commonly strained muscles include:

• Hamstrings

• Quadriceps

• Calf (Gastrocnemius/Soleus)

• Adductors (groin muscles)

• Lower back muscles

• Shoulder and neck muscles

You might feel a sudden sharp pain, tightness, or spasm, followed by swelling, bruising, or weakness. In more minor strains, you may only feel stiffness or discomfort after activity.

Understanding the Healing Process

Muscle strains vary in severity:

• Grade 1: Mild strain with minimal tearing and discomfort.

• Grade 2: Moderate tearing, noticeable pain, reduced strength or flexibility.

• Grade 3: Complete rupture of the muscle, often requiring longer rehab and, in some cases, surgical intervention.

Strains heal through natural tissue repair, but how you move and load the tissue during this time can make all the difference. Proper rehab prevents re-injury and ensures the muscle regains its strength, coordination, and resilience.

How Fit Bomb Physio Can Help

Our physiotherapists are experts in diagnosing and treating muscle strains using a targeted, evidence-based approach. We’ll tailor a rehab plan to your goals—whether that’s returning to sport, staying active at work, or simply walking without pain.

Your rehab will include:

• Thorough assessment to identify the muscle involved, assess its strength, and pinpoint contributing factors

• Hands-on therapy to reduce muscle tension and improve muscle length as needed

• Progressive loading and strength work to restore muscle performance and prevent recurrence

• Movement retraining to improve running, lifting, or sport-specific patterns

• Education and activity planning to help you train smart and return safely

We also use video analysis and functional testing when helpful, especially for active individuals or athletes aiming for a confident return to high performance.

Preventing Re-Injury

Recurrent muscle strains are common - especially if rehab is rushed or incomplete. We’ll guide you through the full recovery process and beyond, helping you build stronger, more resilient movement patterns and develop a long-term plan to stay injury-free.
