What is Pelvic Girdle Pain?

Pelvic girdle pain refers to pain felt anywhere from the lower back down to the thighs, including the hips, buttocks, pubic bone, and groin area.

It’s often related to changes in the way the pelvis moves and supports load — but the good news is, it’s very treatable with the right approach.

Pelvic girdle pain can happen:

• During or after pregnancy

• Following an injury (like a fall or heavy lifting)

• As part of general low back or hip problems

• In people of all fitness levels and ages

It’s not just pregnant people who experience Pelvic girdle pain— it’s a common condition across all stages of life.

Common Symptoms of Pelvic Girdle Pain

You might be dealing with pelvic girdle pain if you notice:

• Pain when walking, climbing stairs, or standing on one leg

• Discomfort turning over in bed or getting in/out of a car

• Pain around the hips, lower back, buttocks, groin, or pubic area

• Feelings of instability or weakness in the pelvis

• Stiffness after sitting or lying for long periods

What Causes Pelvic Girdle Pain?

Pelvic girdle pain isn’t caused by a single factor.

It’s usually linked to a combination of things, including:

• Changes in how the muscles and joints around the pelvis work together

• Interestingly both weak core and pelvic muscles as well as tense / overactive core and pelvic muscle can contribute to pelvic girdle pain

• Altered movement patterns or postures

• Previous injuries or surgeries, especially around the pelvic area

• Hormonal changes (especially during pregnancy)

• In inflammatory arthritis, such as sacroilitis or ankolying spondylitis

• A traumatic injury, such as a fall or missed step

• Increased sensitivity of nerves and tissues around the pelvis

• Factors which increase tissue sensitivity such as poor sleep, high stress, low mood and low activity levels

• Unhelpful, scary beliefs, not backed by scientific evidence: the pelvis cannot moved “out of place”. It can however become veery sensitive, tense and / or weak.
